1. New Social Media Vetting Policy
HMS has added guidance regarding a newly implemented U.S. State Department policy that requires international student visa applicants (F, M, and J categories) to make their social media profiles publicly accessible. Consular officers are now conducting a full scan of applicants’ online footprints—including posts, affiliations, and past behavior—to assess any potential “hostile attitudes” toward U.S. values or institutions. Refusing to make accounts public may be interpreted as withholding information, which could potentially jeopardize visa approval.
Why it matters for you:
Take steps now to review your online presence and ensure your profiles don't contain content that could be misunderstood during vetting.
2. Introduction of the Visa Integrity Fee
The HMS Visa page also highlights a new Visa Integrity Fee, mandated under the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (H.R. 1). Here’s what applicants should know:
Amount: At least $250, though DHS may adjust upward based on inflation starting in fiscal year 2026.
Who pays: All applicants for nonimmigrant visas (e.g., F-1, J-1, H-1B, B-1/B-2), except those under the Visa Waiver Program or certain Canadian citizens. It applies per individual visa issuance.
When effective: Though the law took effect on July 4, 2025, the implementation is expected in fiscal year 2026.
Refund possibility: In some cases, it may be reimbursable—but only after the visa expires and if you've complied with its terms, such as leaving the U.S. on time or maintaining lawful status.
No waivers or exceptions: The fee is mandatory with no possibility for reduction or exemption.
Why it matters for you:
Factor this additional cost into your travel and study budget now. Budgeting for yourself—and any dependents involved—will prevent surprises later.
